Harris Hood

Hello darling. I kind of feel like this may not be a post-worthy project. However, I am still on the hunt for a good beanie replacement and therefore should document my attempts. This is the Harris Hood by Cheryl Mokhtari. The pictures on the project page look great. It looks like the exact thing I was wanting. I used Ella Rae Cashmerino Aran in a gorgeous cream color, which has devastatingly been discontinued.

What went right?

This is a very well written and clear pattern. I didn’t have to do any guesswork or figuring out. The fabric that the yarn made was squishy and soft and beautiful. The construction was really interesting and while it differed greatly from the construction of the hood on the Traveler, it came together very nicely. I did have to add drawstring holes at the bottom of the hood. There was a drawstring channel, but no holes were mentioned.

What went wrong?

It looks so stupid on me. My head looks like an enormous Q-Tip when the hood is up. If it laying flat on my collar, it isn’t so horrible, but it still looks odd. I have spent some time trying to mentally alter the pattern around the collar to see if it could be made better. I thought about elongating the bottom rib or splitting it on the sides and creating a front and back bib, but none of my ideas seem like good ones.

The bottom line is that while I enjoyed knitting it, I really don’t like this hood. I have placed it in my gift/donate cubby and have considered ripping it out and reusing the yarn for something else. The jury is still out since the yarn is discontinued and I only have a small quantity of it left. I will keep it intact until I finalize my decision. You can’t win them all, and for me at least, this was not a win.

Loves,

M
